In fact, sending agents armed with just a smile would have worked out just fine in this case.

This is nonsense. The testimony of the agents was that they identified themselves and the Relatives blockaded the door with a couch. No smile would have gotten Elian out of that house. Those people in the house are liars. The ripped apart door shown on CNN was not ripped apart when the agent was leaving the room with Elian.

There were para-military Cubanos around. It is wholly preposterous that you would continue this charade that they were an innocent unarmed law abiding cooperative family. They were in defiance of the Federal Government. (What would there be for them to be negotiating at 5:00am if they were so cooperative?) There was a ring of protection outside the house as well. The show of extreme force, the lightning execution of the rescue (55 seconds inside the house) all speak to the professionalism of the operation.

It is really beyond reason that you still pursue your right wing goals at the expense of trammeling the psyche of a six year old boy. Not to mention denying a father access to his child.
