I hadn't heard about them being confined in a compound. Can't help but wonder why bother - where would they go anyway?

I know Castro is a ruthless dictator on his last legs. Exploiting the Elian case to drum up nationalistic support among the Cuban population IMO. Of course, the public opinion / propaganda benefit of treating a family which is getting so much press attention beningly is the best asset the Gonzalez family in Cuba has. MO of course.
