Hanaro Telecom to Deploy 200K ADSL Lines Using Lucent Technologies AnyMedia Access System to Meet Explosive Demand for High-speed Access in Korea
MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 2, 2000--Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) and Hanaro Telecom Inc. (Nasdaq: HANA - news), a local telecommunications service provider in Korea, today announced that Hanaro has purchased additional Lucent equipment to provide high-speed Internet access and basic telephone services to customers in the major metropolitan areas of Daejon, Daeku and Kwangju.

Hanaro will significantly expand its rollout of asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL), ADSL Lite, ISDN and basic telephone services with Lucent's AnyMedia© Access System, an integrated narrowband and broadband access platform. Hanaro expects to have more than 200,000 ADSL lines deployed with the AnyMedia platform by the end of May.

Korea's Ministry of Information and Communication estimates that one in four people in Korea use the Internet. This interest in going online is fueling the growth of high-speed Internet access, including DSL service. The agency estimates the number of ADSL subscribers in Korea grew 57 percent last year to more than a quarter of a million subscribers.

``Our customers' increasing appetite for the Internet is driving demand for voice and high-speed data access in Korea,'' said Mr. Shin Yun Sik, president and CEO of Hanaro Telecom, Inc. ``Lucent's AnyMedia platform provides us with the flexibility to deliver both DSL and regular telephone service, and provides an aggressive evolution plan for adding new services and subscribers in the future.''

Since January 1, Hanaro has tripled its ADSL subscriber base. Lucent and Hanaro announced the first phase of a major AnyMedia Access System roll-out in December of last year.

``Korea is one of the fastest-growing markets for high-speed access services,'' said David Spear, Lucent's vice president of Product Marketing, Switching and Access Solutions. ``We're pleased to help Hanaro quickly expand their AnyMedia Access System deployment to meet this escalating consumer demand.''

A highly scaleable, high-density, multiservice access vehicle, the AnyMedia Access System is designed to provide a multitude of services from any transport medium -- twisted pair, T-1/E-1 line, fiber or wireless -- to any digital switch and/or data network through standard interfaces. The integrated system supports both narrowband and broadband services -- voice, special services, coin, ISDN and xDSL -- and can be enhanced to include IP or ATM interfaces for delivering packet-based services.

The system uses ``plug and play'' application packs, enabling service providers to add broadband services such as ADSL as market demand dictates. This flexible, outside-plant compatible multiservice access vehicle has been extremely popular with emerging service providers.

Lucent Technologies and Hanaro have been working closely together since 1997. Lucent was selected by Hanaro to supply its WaveStar(TM) ADM 16/1 optical multiplexer and transport systems, and DACS© II digital access cross-connect systems.

Established in September 1997, Hanaro Telecom Inc., is a local service provider in Korea. The company was selected as the second nation-wide local call service carrier by the Korean Ministry of Information and Communications in 1997 as a part of the nation's drive to facilitate the establishment of a high-speed, multimedia society.

Lucent Technologies Korea has been serving the Korean communications market for more than 20 years. It offers a full array of telecommunications network and communications equipment for telecom operators, service providers and enterprises.
