Jim,

As I understand the situation, MMC is technically much more difficult to manufacture with much tighter tolerances. Eli touched on this during the last conference call. It is unclear to me whether the controller and the flash RAM are actually on a single chip or if it is a composite product like CompactFlash.

In any case, you will see the card assemblers fall by the wayside with regard to MMC. I am not certain Lexar or Simple or PNY or Microtech have the know-how to make MMC competitively. SanDisk has a big, big headstart in this space. The only announcements I have read are the Hitachi announcement from a year ago and Infineon's intentions to produce MMC compatible ROM cards.

Once we get to 512Mbit flash chips, the sweet spot for the MMC/SDMC/MP3 market, SanDisk will have their hands full trying to make these things fast enough. Thus, the CF assembly patents become critical.
