BOTHELL, Wash. (CBS.MW) -- Vixel Corp. shares surged 67 percent Tuesday after Lucent Technologies said it'll integrate Vixel's fiber channel technology into its OptiStar product line.

Lucent will use Vixel's switching technology in its computer storage network product line.

Vixel (VIXL: news, msgs) makes interconnection products for storage area networks (SAN), which link servers and other storage devices to a LAN or Wide Area Networks (WAN).

Vixel's switches, hubs, are transceivers are based on fiber channel technology. Vixel shares were up 5 7/16 to 13 1/2.

Lucent (LU: news, msgs) announced that it will integrate Vixel's fiber channel technology into its OptiStar product line.

Vixel's Technology will help Lucent develop products that interconnect SAN's over high-performance, IP-based WAN's.

Connecting islands of SANs with IP-based WANs increases the flexibility and capabilities of the storage infrastructure to meet today's e-commerce applications.

"By integrating Vixel's Fibre Channel switching technology directly into our WAN access solutions, Lucent can help eliminate the bandwidth bottleneck created by traditional routed architectures, and extend the SAN beyond the campus and into the high-speed optical WAN network," said Tim Sullivan, vice president & general manager of Lucent's Optical Area Networking group. Lucent shares fell 1 1/16 to 62 7/16 in recent trading
