Sun and Exodus Communications Announce Expanded Relationship to Deliver Mission-Critical Internet Services Exodus Selects Sun to Provide Platform for its Performance Monitoring Services PALO ALTO, Calif. and SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 2 /PRNewswire/ -- In a significant expansion of their existing relationship for the delivery of mission-critical Internet services, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - news) and Exodus Communications(TM), Inc. today announced that Sun will provide the platform for Exodus'© Web site performance monitoring services. The deal will transition the Internet monitoring applications and services offered by Exodus subsidiary Service Metrics(TM) to Sun's dot-com-grade Solaris(TM) Operating Environment platform, helping to provide increased reliability, security and manageability and enabling Exodus to scale the service to meet future demand.
The Service Metrics offering from Exodus utilizes its proprietary network of Data Collection Agents (DCA) -- which collects more than 2.4 million Web measurements per day -- to offer businesses unparalleled visibility into the performance of their mission-critical Internet operations. Exodus' Service Metrics network, with presence in North and South America, Europe, and the Far East, is located strategically across the Internet. Exodus will be upgrading the Service Metrics network with Sun's Netra(TM) t1, t 1125 and t 1405 carrier-grade servers, clusters of its Sun Enterprise(TM) 4500 and 6500 systems and Sun StorEdge(TM) A3500 arrays.
``Together, Sun and Exodus are helping companies around the world dot-com their businesses from infancy to full maturity -- enabling them to focus on their core competencies,'' said Beverly Brown, executive vice president and CMO for Exodus. ``Our strong relationship with Sun, and the great results our customers have had with the Sun(TM) platform, make it the logical choice to provide the platform for our Service Metrics Internet monitoring offering.''
``As Web sites become more important to their owners and spending on them increases, companies need a reliable way to analyze, evaluate and improve the customer experience, making the Internet monitoring offering from Exodus mission-critical in its own right,'' said John McFarlane, president of Sun's Network Service Provider division. ``Exodus selected Sun to power its Service Metrics offering for the same reason the majority of its customers rely on the Sun platform -- because Sun offers the reliability, security and scalability that are a vital part of delivering services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.''
Today's agreement expands Sun's existing, strong relationship with Exodus, one of the industry's leading providers of complex Internet hosting and managed services. Currently, the Sun platform -- including more than 50 Sun StorEdge arrays and StorEdge L11000 tape libraries -- powers Exodus' DataVault(TM) Service, which provides a dedicated system for effectively safeguarding mission-critical data. The Exodus ReadyCache(TM) Content Distribution Service, which provides an efficient way for customers with high traffic Internet sites to deliver more content to more end-users without a costly investment in server infrastructure, runs on clusters of Sun's Netra t 1120 carrier-grade systems and the Inktomi Traffic Server. Sun products also power Exodus' firewall, disaster recovery, and network management services, and are the platform of choice for many of Exodus' 2,800 customers.
In addition, Exodus is a charter member of the SunTone(SM) Certification and Branding Program, an industry-wide initiative led by Sun to define and audit service provider infrastructure, operational practices, hardware, software, and ultimately, overall service delivery, to provide established standards for performance, security, availability and uptime. Exodus is among the first companies to receive SunTone Certification for its complex Web hosting services.
Exodus is also one of the first participants in Sun's Developer Connections(SM) StartUp Accelerator Program, which gives elite startup dot-com companies immediate access at minimal cost to a professionally managed development and testing environment -- including hardware, software, bandwidth and services -- in conjunction with leading service providers. And as a charter member of the Exodus Rapid Deployment Initiative, Sun provides a bundled, ready-to-install, scalable Web hosting solution based on Sun Enterprise and Netra carrier-grade servers, plus integration, implementation, maintenance, 24x7 consultation and support through Exodus Internet Data Centers (IDCs).
