( BW)(CA-BROADCOM-CORP)(BRCM) Broadcom Enters Optical Networking Market with World's First 10-Gigabit 4-Channel CMOS Transceiver; Transceiver Extends Ethernet Networking into the WAN
Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

The BCM8010 includes several important breakthroughs in transceiver technology, speed and performance. It is the industry's first programmable quad CMOS (Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) transceiver that can support data rates up to 10 Gbps. It is also the first transceiver to incorporate receiver adaptive equalizers at these speeds, which improves overall cable reach and transceiver performance. This adaptive equalizer design continuously removes inter-symbol interference from the incoming data stream, thereby enhancing noise immunity, and simplifying board and system design.

Using its advanced mixed-signal design techniques and proprietary cell library, Broadcom has designed the world's highest speed Ethernet transceiver in a standard 0.22 micron CMOS process. The use of standard CMOS process enabled Broadcom to deliver a 10 gigabit transceiver at a fraction of the cost of other transceivers manufactured in Gallium Arsenide (GaAs), Silicon-Germanium (SiGe) or Bipolar manufacturing processes.

The FusionCore also demonstrates the world's lowest jitter performance, at below 3 pico-seconds RMS (Root Mean Square), of any Ethernet transceiver. This is achieved through a proprietary LC Voltage Controlled Oscillator (LCVCO) architecture, which significantly reduces jitter in both the transmitter and receiver paths, compared to traditional and less accurate ring-oscillator solutions. On-chip diagnostics with unique built-in self-test capabilities also ease system design and improve manufacturability.

The BCM8010 is packaged in a 256-pin TBGA package, and samples are available today, priced at $88 each. Broadcom also offers a complete evaluation kit, including evaluation boards and related software running on the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 98 or Windows(R) NT 4.0 operating systems.
