Cambridge Technology Partners Charts Future With New Economy Winners CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 2, 2000--
Timken and AirNet Systems Choose Cambridge to Help Create Innovative Business Models to Leapfrog Competition
Cambridge Technology Partners, (Inc. (NASDAQ: CATP) (Cambridge), a global e-integration services provider, today announced the successful delivery of a New Economy roadmap for The Timken Company (NYSE: TKR), a leading international manufacturer of specialty steel and bearings. Cambridge also announced its contract to develop the Internet business strategy for AirNet Systems (AirNet), an industry-leading transportation network (NYSE: ANS). AirNet and Timken are two top examples of how Cambridge is helping companies meet the challenges of the fast-paced, global Internet Economy.
Cambridge Drives Success at Timken
The Timken Company engaged Cambridge Technology Partners to help it explore how the Internet would impact its traditional business model, identify new revenue opportunities, and create Internet awareness across its organization. As the company's key e-business strategy partner, Cambridge worked with Timken to scour it's existing business model for places where it could most strategically intersect with e-business, and created an actionable plan for Timken to execute on its strengths via the Internet.
"Cambridge helped us attack the massive change issues necessary to use the Internet in a way that complements our physical-world business and allows us to grow our market advantages. Working with Cambridge, we were able to discover ways to truly transform our business," said Graham Allen, Timken's e-Business Project Leader.
With many industrial companies such as General Motors Corp. and General Electric Co. using the Internet to revolutionize their markets, Timken saw the potential to do the same in its sectors. To defend and extend its leadership over longtime global competitors in its bearing and specialty-metals businesses, Timken engaged with Cambridge to define an online business strategy that would capitalize on previously unrecognized opportunities. As a result of its work with Cambridge, Timken underwent a significant re-organization to best position the company for e-business success. Timken selected Cambridge because of its strong, global track record of helping companies in many industries leverage the Internet for competitive advantage. "It is no longer valuable to put up a Web site and hope your customers, suppliers or employees will use it," said Allen.
"Timken's strategic positioning is unique in that it leverages and extends its existing channel partners rather than disintermediate them," said Aditya Joshi, digital strategy client partner, Cambridge Technology Partners. "Cambridge and Timken are working together to lead this old-world industry into the New Economy."
AirNet and Cambridge Tackle the Hot Express Delivery Market
AirNet Systems called on Cambridge to help it identify new competitive threats and to determine how to leverage the company's core competencies to eliminate those threats. By creating this innovative digital strategy, AirNet is finding a new approach to the express delivery market using the tools of the New Economy.
"When we saw dramatic industry change all around us, we decided to bring in a third party to help us assess the situation," said Wynn Petersen, Director of Corporate Development at AirNet Systems. "We chose Cambridge because it clearly stood out as a New Economy leader, demonstrating understanding not only of the impact of the Internet on business, but of the particular landscape of the delivery industry. Also, we knew we could count on Cambridge to give us more than just a report to go on--they are helping us devise an actionable strategy which we will begin to implement as quickly as possible."
The express delivery industry is becoming increasingly competitive as companies vie to become logistics providers for the explosion of new online businesses. "AirNet is in an industry where winners and losers will be determined very rapidly," said Carey Cheri, client partner, Cambridge Technology Partners. "Cambridge is helping AirNet prepare for that eventuality today by determining how best to go up against new and bigger competition, and come out on top."
Cambridge's Digital Business Strategy group was formed in early 1999, with the goal of helping companies face the new challenges and opportunities brought about by the explosion of Internet-based business. With more than 50 digital strategists worldwide, and a proven fast-turn methodology, Cambridge is uniquely positioned to rapidly help companies determine their New Economy readiness, and then develop actionable strategies that use the power of the Internet to compete and win in the New Economy.
"Cambridge's ability to create and drive rapid-results with New Economy strategies takes on an ever more important role for our clients," said Jack Messman, president and CEO, Cambridge Technology Partners. "In addition to helping companies like Timken and AirNet build an actionable e-business blueprint, Cambridge's digital business strategists are critical in the process of helping Cambridge decide where to make its own venture investments."
