Top Layer Networks and Internet Security Systems Introduce the Industry's First 100% Intrusion Detection for High Speed, Highly Loaded Networks.
WESTBOROUGH, Mass. and ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 17, 2000
Market-Leading RealSecure Intrusion Detection Software and Industry's
Only Flow Mirroring Technology Give Unprecedented Ability to Protect E-Commerce Sites, Preserving Network Integrity, Availability and Responsiveness Against Attacks.
Top Layer Networks, the emerging leader in 7-Layer Switching solutions that provide unmatched e-application control and urgently-needed network security, and Internet Security Systems (ISS) (NASDAQ: ISSX) today announced a breakthrough integrated security solution to prevent intrusions and stop attacks more fully and immediately than ever before. The powerful combination of ISS' leading SAFEsuite(R) intrusion detection software, RealSecure(TM), and Top Layer's award-winning AppSwitch(TM) family delivers unprecedented network intrusion detection and security for even the most heavily utilized networks, such as those associated with E-Commerce businesses.
Top Layer's innovative FlowMirror(TM) enables organizations to use RealSecure for the first time to detect intrusions on high-speed networks in real time, monitoring their full-duplex 100M and Gigabit links. Organizations can now better ensure the protection of their information on high bandwidth and high revenue links. The announcement introduces new levels of power and flexibility in the deployment of ISS' RealSecure industry-leading network intrusion detection solution.
Mark Kadrich of ConXion, a leading web hosting site for vendors such as Microsoft, observed: "Initial examination of the Top Layer Networks' product has demonstrated its great potential in ISP/ASP environments for security enforcement and data usage measurements."
"Top Layer and Internet Security Systems are together introducing the industry's first intrusion detection solution for high volume networks, giving users new ability to detect unwanted intrusions," stated Michael Howard, Principal Analyst at Infonetics Research.
"The events of the last two months clearly underscore the tremendous importance of protecting network stability, network availability, and information integrity. With the economic impact of unwanted intrusions increasingly apparent, this powerful solution should pay for itself with the first averted or terminated intrusion," Howard concluded.
"We are committed to advancing the state of the art in network security and view this as crucially important and exciting, particularly given the world's ever-increasing Web-dependence," observed Top Layer Networks President and CEO Bruce Cohen. "A visit to e-Bay alone shows that thousands of small businesses are dependent on the Web's security and stability to run their own business. As more B-2-B and consumer transactions move to the web, Top Layer and Internet Security Systems will be there, protecting users and businesses by uniquely enabling industrial strength RealSecure intrusion detection."
According to a recent study by the US Senate Subcommittee on Investigations, the mean cost per intrusion was $465K in 1999; the FBI estimates that enterprises see an average of 5.4 intrusions per year. Additionally, an annual survey just completed by the FBI and the San Francisco based Computer Security Institute reported total verifiable losses in 1999 of over $265M, with over 600 pending cases under investigation. Recent reports further underscore the necessity for vendors to collaborate on best-of-breed solutions to thwart attacks that can adversely affect corporate growth levels.
Flow Mirroring Affords Unprecedented Intrusion Monitoring and Detection
Top Layer's stateful packet processing engines allow traffic to be controlled on a flow by flow basis. Top Layer's unique Flow Mirroring leverages this flow control, load-balancing flows among multiple RealSecure Network Engines, allowing each to see the entire flow so that it can monitor the complete client server conversation.
Each new flow that is established is separately routed and "tied" to a specific RealSecure Network Engine. Up to 10 intrusion detection engines can be attached to a single switch. Depending on the number of engines, and system configuration, any user can achieve 100% coverage at 100% utilization of a 100 FDX Mbps link. Each flow stays "connected" to a specific RealSecure engine until the flow is terminated. As each new flow is established, it is sent to the next-in-line engine and so on via a flow load balancing algorithm called round robin. The AppSwitch 2500 is flexible enough to configure load balancing based on traffic types (applications) as well.
A Gigabit solution, available in Q2, 2000, will support the same concept of load balancing for Gigabit traffic by Flow Mirroring traffic from Gigabit Ethernet segments to multiple RealSecure Network Engines. ISS and Top Layer Networks have partnered with the shared mission to bring the best of breed technology to ISS customers. This best-of-breed relationship also encompasses joint marketing and sales activities.
Nancy Blair, vice president of threat management technology, Internet Security Systems, concluded: "Our strategic relationship with Top Layer provides a solution for an increased demand for using RealSecure intrusion detection to protect high-speed networks. We're delighted to be working with the a leading-edge switch vendor that understands the importance of complete intrusion detection coverage and can deliver these results, Top Layer Networks."
About Top Layer Networks
Top Layer Networks develops networking switches that strategically manage traffic flows by using information from all seven layers of the OSI model. Top Layer products support business application, transaction and user prioritization; traffic admission control/intra-organizational firewalling; application-level monitoring; and services accounting. Its AppSwitch family resolves the challenges of supporting today's dynamic networks and application environments. Top Layer Networks' architecture and its AppSwitch family represent a new class of switch solution, and are the first products to ensure that business-critical and delay-sensitive traffic receive the appropriate priority or bandwidth. The AppSwitch is the industry's only solution that allows Service Providers and users to fully identify, control, and prioritize both HTTP-based and non-HTTP-based traffic. It is the recipient of Networld + Interop's "Best of Show" Award for Spring '99, and was recently named "Best of the Tests" by Network World. Additional information is available at www.TopLayer.com.
