1ST ANNUAL VOLTAIRE'S PORCH GOLF TOURNAMENT (format proposal)
joel- here are my ideas. you or any of the golfers are invited to ponder and modify (or totally ignore and discard)
1) FORMAT: 4 dude scramble
why? because of the different levels of players involved, it's a format in which everyone, regardless of skill, has a chance to contribute the occasional good shot or putt without feeling badly about poor shots hurting the team. all hit from the tee, the best ball is chosen by the team, then all players hit from that spot, the best is chosen and the play continues in that manner for each shot until the ball is holed out.
2) TEAM PLAYER SELECTIONS: luck of the draw
the 4 dude scramble is composed of teams consisting of an A, B, C, & D player with A players defined as the lowest handicap players and D players defined as the highest handicap players. B & C players are groups of players with handicaps in the lower middle and upper middle ranges.
if we go with dealer's suggestion that all will be treated equally, then danny's suggestion of drawing players from hats would be the fairest way to determine team members, or as you (and yogi berra) would say, "pair up the foursomes" <G>
we simply determine handicaps, give them A, B, C,& D designations (determined by the range of the field), put the names in A, B, C, & D hats and draw one from each hat to make up each foursome.
i realize this may put a crimp in your predetermined "dream team threesome" but hey!... everyone wants you and volt and the coonzie on their team -- do we go with one happy foursome and four sad ones? nah... wouldn't be good manners... ya can't have three A players on one team anyway.
think about it and you will see that dealer is right.
another advantage of this method of grouping, besides avoiding favoritism, is that it will put us with people we might not otherwise have gotten to know as well - no better way to get to know someone than to spend four hours golfing with them.

ps- i ALMOST took the RNWK plunge today as i moved out of qcom july 165 calls but plowed it all into qcom october 120s instead. blame polvie's demons. :) |
