It's going to be a blood-based test in which you put a sample of blood into a special collecting device at home and then send it by mail for analysis in a lab. You call a few days later and give a special ID number to receive the results. If you test positive, you are connected with a specially trained counselor, who supposedly keeps you calm and from doing anything stupid.

This mail-order solution is not the most high tech, but it's the only solution currently approved by the FDA for the home-based market. SALV, TRIBY, and some other companies already have rapid diagnostic tests for HIV that will give you results in minutes and at far less expense, but the current position of AIDS activists in the US makes it unlikely that the FDA will approve such tests for home use anytime in the near future.
