Broadwing Chooses Lucent's Anymedia Access System to Deliver High-speed Internet, Voice and Data Services
AnyMedia contract part of master agreement for equipment and services

MURRAY HILL, N.J. and CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 3, 2000-- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) and Broadwing Inc. (NYSE: BRW - news), a data and Internet communications company with a next-generation network, today announced that Broadwing's subsidiary, Cincinnati Bell, is deploying Lucent's AnyMedia© Access System to extend asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) and other telephony services to business and residential customers throughout the Cincinnati area.

The Cincinnati Bell ADSL product, branded ZoomTown, enables high-speed Internet connections to residents and businesses over the same copper telephone lines that handle voice and fax calls. It does not interfere with voice traffic on the line, so one person can make or receive calls while another is using the same line to connect to the Internet. Cincinnati Bell has one of the nation's highest penetrations of DSL customers.

``The versatility of the AnyMedia© Access System will help us extend our industry-leading ADSL availability and offer more customers the ZoomTown service that has been incredibly successful for us,'' said Dennis Hinkel, Cincinnati Bell's vice president of network planning, engineering and construction.

Janet Davidson, Lucent InterNetworking Systems group president, said, ``Broadwing gives customers a better Internet experience by providing a quicker, more reliable connection and the capability for enhanced applications through their ADSL offering. Our AnyMedia Access System will help Cincinnati Bell provide a greater reach in the community so more of their customers can realize the full potential of the Internet experience with their ZoomTown service.''

The AnyMedia contract is part of a multi-million dollar agreement that sets guidelines for future contracts between Broadwing and Lucent and allows Broadwing and its subsidiaries to purchase state-of-the-art Lucent products. The agreement continues a strategic relationship with Lucent and Cincinnati Bell that began more than 16 years ago. Cincinnati Bell and IXC Communications merged last November, becoming Broadwing.

About AnyMedia Access System

The AnyMedia Access System uses ``plug and play'' application packs that allow the mix of telephony and DSL services to be changed at any time. For example, as ADSL application packs can be added as market demands dictate. The system can be placed anywhere, including the central office, at the customer premise, or in the outside plant. The AnyMedia Access System is part of comprehensive portfolio of Lucent access solutions, including solutions for high-speed copper, cable and wireless applications, as well a traditional telephony.
