Looks like we are at the beginning of the VoDSL wave. Hopefully Aware's VeDSL catches the eye of several vendors.

North American Voice over DSL Market to Reach 40,000 Lines in 2000

BOSTON, MA -- MAY 3, 2000 -- North American DSL lines used to provide commercial Voice over DSL (VoDSL) services will reach 40,000 by the end of 2000, according to new statistics published by TeleChoice, Inc.

Initial deployments of VoDSL services, according to TeleChoice?s research, are mainly being carried out by a group of small regional DSL CLECs, with larger national CLECs such as Covad, NorthPoint, and Rhythms beginning trial deployments in conjunction with voice CLEC partners. Additionally, ILECs have not yet begun deployments of VoDSL. Because these larger providers of general DSL services are taking a slower approach, TeleChoice projects that wide-scale commercial deployments of VoDSL services will not begin to take place until the second half of 2001 at the earliest.

Moving beyond the year 2000, TeleChoice estimates that the number of DSL lines used to provide VoDSL services will grow to 100,000 by year-end 2001, with widespread deployment in the following years increasing the number to 1.75 million by the end of 2004.

As the deployment of VoDSL shifts from today?s trial environment to full commercial service, TeleChoice estimates that the number of telephone numbers in use per VoDSL line will decrease as small business, telecommuter, and residential customers begin to adopt the service for their voice needs. Initially, deployments will average 9 telephone numbers per DSL line, but TeleChoice estimates this number will decrease to 4 numbers per line by year-end 2004.

?This year, the DSL industry will begin to move towards deployment of VoDSL solutions, with several regional DSL providers offering commercial services within limited areas. Larger data CLECs, in partnership with voice CLECs, will continue their market trials for these services and begin to launch their commercial VoDSL services,? says Adam Guglielmo, TeleChoice DSL analyst. ?Voice over DSL is one of the key new value-added services that providers must begin to offer to differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive market for DSL services. As the nationwide network buildouts of the past two years begin to offer customers a choice of DSL providers, CLECs must begin to leverage these new technologies to offer a complete service portfolio to their customers.?

The complete set of statistics is available from TeleChoice?s www.xdsl.com site, under the ?Deployment and Projections? section in the left-hand column. For regular updates on the DSL industry, stay tuned to TeleChoice?s www.xdsl.com.
