I turn the light on IMMEDIATELY, before any of those weird night thoughts can get started. I won't even allow the briefest flicker of what that interesting idea was that brought me up from my pillow wide awake to take hold.
Because they are very, very sneaky... those night things-- they masquerade as penetrating insights and you get all excited and then you get up and look at them, and it was all a tawdry stage effect.
It wasn't a life-altering revelation after all. It was just an almost pun, one of those not quites.

So I have books placed especially for that moment- right next to my Little NIght Light. RIght now it's Van Doren's History of Knowledge. I've been reading it for two weeks, and I'm still in the Fertile Crescent.
