For short calls, its rather easy to track a long watch list call. All you do is monitor the stock and if it moves up a bit but hits a plateau (intraday trading range, consolidation, whatever you want to call it), you wait. usually gappers will move ahead to retrace former highs, when they consolidate is the time to really monitor them closely. There is a 'terrace' or 'diving board' from which this stock will either move down and fill the gap up or move up and make new highs. From the experience of the last 6 or 7 weeks, they usually MOVE DOWN so you can short them (GSPN, TERN, NEWP).. I got NEWP and GSPN up and down but NEWP only down.. I never seem to get NEWP on its way up, I didn't succeed any better today either.
