Bright picture for digital cameras

Two surveys out this week predict big things for the digital camera. If the two are to be believed, 64 per cent of amateur photographers are planning to buy their first digital camera in the next six months ? a trend which will lead to digital camera revenue outstripping conventional camera sales this year.

A report by InfoTrends reckons that in North America sales of digital cameras will reach $1.9 billion this year ? 10 per cent more than expected sales from film cameras. Unit sales are expected to outstrip film camera sales by the year 2002.

As prices fall for digital cameras more and more PC users are expecting to find them as part of PC bundles offered by system builders.

The other report, by Lyra Research, asked nearly 6,700 amateur photographers from 17 countries across North America and Europe about their buying plans. Among other things, it found that the bulk of amateur snappers are also very technically literate and are frequent Internet users. ©
