We'd really have to get neck high in doo doo for the true 'currency of last resort' to shine greater than 'paper gold'. It takes a painful stretch of the imagination, but if gold replaced the usd as the only meaningful currency around here, there can be no doubt that the government would prevent the mining industry from rivaling its control over the creation of money.

They would interfere in some form, either in an attempt to fix gold (which would fail), or create a new tax on it's creation (a tax in gold, not dollars!), and crush the margins on the miners. Of course all but the owners of gold stocks (something less .1% of the population) would support this action, as there's nothing worse than seeing one's government humbled by an old yellow dog. Business laws would be obsolete and would need some re-writing if something like that happened, and the use of force to rescue the dollar would be accepted and welcomed.

Foreign miners who can restructure to deal with European bullion banks might fare better, given the relative strength of the euro in such a situation. The euro would get crushed as well of course as all paper would be distrusted, but in such a situation the euro could be leashed to the yellow beasts snoozing in the cellars of Europe.

Thus the why behind the organization of SIL as an offshore corporation by Soros.

I consider this a remote possibility, but prepare for it in any case.
