Greenspan mum on inflation, upbeat on economy-Japan

WASHINGTON, May 3 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan said there was much data and debate on U.S. inflation and that nothing decisive could be said, a Japanese Economic Planning Agency official said on Wednesday.

Greenspan also said that the U.S. economy was healthy and in a positive cycle, the official told reporters after a meeting between Greenspan and Japanese Economic Planning Agency Minister Taichi Sakaiya in Washington.

"At their meeting, Chairman Greenspan said that he realized there were various arguments with regard to U.S. inflation and a lot of data, and that he could not say anything decisive," the official said.

"He also said that the U.S. economy is solid and continues to be in a positive cycle," the official added.
