Tazio, you crack me up! LOL

<<p.s. I think my theory of the embargo being lifted before Castro's departure did not impress you.>>

Then you just had to go and get serious. <g> Well, if you insist...

I didn't reply on the matter of the embargo because the discussion on the subject was mostly about how ending the embargo sooner rather than later would be a good thing. What I was watching for was some ideas about how that might come to pass. I've just taken it as a given that the embargo will be queued up upon Castro's departure. To speed up the time frame will require not only overcoming that inertia but some stimulus to get it moving. This Elian business has put the issue back on the radar scope of typical Americans, but I don't see any stimulus out there. No stimulus, no action. The only possibility I can think of is Clinton's urge for a legacy but that seems like a long shot because I don't know where he would get the needed support, certainly not in an election year. I haven't paid a lot of attention to Cuba-U.S. relations since the embargo was in it's infancy. Perhaps you or someone else can see how this could play out. I just can't see it happening.

Even if it were feasible, I'm concerned that ending the embargo on the heels of the Elian matter is a bit tacky. For those who look at life as a series of wins and losses (which appears to be most people) this matter is going to end up in what can only be called a loss for the exiles. Even though they brought some of that on themselves, I feel for them. It's just not nice to hit people when they're down. For those who take a long-term view, it's also not smart.
