Joan, seems to me the regs have been made with the mutual fund industry in mind, and not the little guy.
but anyway, most big pension funds have now such a large equity weighting as a result of the bull market that they are forced by fiduciary regs to reduce it.
and 401 k's, while they are a factor, are not the only vehicle fueling the market. btw, 401 k's are on average used as collateral for loans amounting to 50% of their current value. throughout the financial system there's extreme leverage applied, and collateralized with assets the value of which can fluctuate wildly.
i think that's one of the reasons for the 'Greenspan put'...however, the Greenspan put expires as soon as inflation accelerates sufficiently.
