Pravin,

< They were already capacity constrained at Fab 25. Now, in order to sell Thunderbird, they will have to shift processor capacity to make more Irongates. I'm not sure how they will do this when they were already sold out for the quarter. >

I don't think AMD fabs Irongate chipset. I think TSMC fabs them for AMD.

I see a positive side to this KX133 alleged problem with Tbird - this time around, Taiwanese mobo makers may not wait for Via's chipsets, and may release boards with AMD Irongate chipset. One of the main reasons behind the slow ramp of the Athlon mother boards in Q4'99 and Q1'00 was that most of the Taiwanese mobo manufacturers just waited for Via's chipset.

Based on the pricewatch data - there is a rapid ramp of Athlon mobo going on both in Irongate based as well as KX133 based mobos. The ratio of Irongate based mobo listings vs KX133 is about 2:1. Surprisingly, the early mobo manufacturers like FIC, Microstar didn't release any KX133 based mobos yet.

The KX133 mother boards are supposed to cost less than the ones based on the AMD reference design, but currently the Irongate mobos are the cheapest - mostly priced from $85 - $130.
