There is another motivation for the Fed. They live very well and answer to essentially no one. Thus the more they can do to forward the public perception of themselves the better.

You must be kidding. Take an example of Paul Volker, the Greenspan's predecessor, appointed by Carter, re-appointed by Reagan. He deserves a lot of credit for turning the US (and world economy) from stag-flation and decline to the growth, prosperity that we are enjoying today. While punks like Michael Eisner running a Mickey Mouse operation made millions or even billions, Volker (and Greenspan today) make measly salary of a government bureaucrat.
