The massive government effort here has created Institutions (DEA), created complex intrusions into other countries, (Mexico and Colombia), swollen prison populations, created peripheral victims (robbery, burglary, murder etc.) and some neat little legislation called asset seizure (unconstitutional) and a mini-industry of equipment (military arms, covert surveillance) for thugs (criminal and government) which threatens the support of communities for their local police (who fall victim to the War's "win at all costs" mentality (see Rampart Division of LA Police), not to mention adding to the assault on the 2nd Amendment.

Drug laws are less than 100 years old so you might argue that "they" are not very ingrained in our society either.

It is hard to imagine doing more damage to society than this War on Drugs, short of promoting them in the media like cosmetic surgery, or day-trading your way to wealth.
