Natural-gas stocks posted the biggest gain in the S&P 500,
led by Burlington Resources Inc., up 2 3/16 to 40 13/16, and
Apache Corp., up 4 1/8 to 53 1/4.

The S&P Oil Exploration and Production Index, which includes
natural-gas producers, has risen 11 of the last 12 days and is up
24 percent for the year. The S&P index of gas pipeline companies
is up 38 percent, the best-performing group this year. Natural-gas
futures have risen 43 percent this year.

Oilfield services and equipment companies also rallied.
