Thanks for your response, Mark. Your answer makes sense and is consistent with everything I had previously understood. In fact, since I use AOL as an alternate browser, I checked and found that their announcement about the virus states that the attachment must be downloaded for the virus to be activated. Of course, you are absolutely correct that AOL always forgets about the havoc wreaked if email is downloaded via flash sessions.

Is there any reason to believe that Netscape (my primary browser) or IE work differently?

In other words, has the moment that we've all been waiting for arrived...the moment wherein one may get a virus simply by reading an email? Or is this just another version of the Melissa mechanism?
