The Att board hasn't liked most of the actions taken by Armstrong over the last year. He has been the kingpin behind those various actions and most of them were done over board objections about excesses. The earnings loss was a significant blow. You can tell Armstrong has been mortally wounded by his body language in the several interviews he's given recently. If he goes, Excite is history, but whoever replaces Armstrong won't give up ATHM. Armstrong bet the company on ATHM and its too late to try to escape from that decision. No reason to retain Excite though. Most likely they would spin it off and realize some very usable capital.
