i've been watching the exchange between 49r and others. i'm reminded of what cardinal newman said: one can almost define a gentleman as one who does not inflict pain needlessly. apollo, about as politely as possible, suggested that some on the thread might find 49r's descriptions offensive, at least as delivered on a public thread as opposed to a private conversation. why that provoked 49r later to announce that he was going to treat with respect only those who treated him w/ respect is beyond me.

but 49r's response reminded me of another defn of a gentleman: one who can disagree without being disagreeable. you tell me where the shoe fits.
