-MrB,

You may be exactly "on target" about SI--however...

What we're trying to do on this thread is to determine how to best deal with kooks. IMHO, whether or not the folks at SI want to take our ideas and run with them is of secondary importance--if it is important at all in the process of developing innovative approaches.

I think Gottfried came up with a splendid idea, and it is an idea worth pursuing; not only for potential use here at SI, but at other web sites as well. A good idea doesn't necessarily require the approval of any particular person or persons. It could be made a recommendation to simply be either accepted or rejected. Either way, the idea would stand on its own merit independent of acceptance.

I guess what I'm suggesting is that we don't let speculation on what the SI folks may or may not agree with, determine, or limit in any way, the creative process as exemplified by Gottfried's idea. Some of the best approaches for dealing with kooks may be radically nonconventional.

Personally, what I'd like to see on this thread is a lot of brainstorming as we've been doing, and to not prematurely discount any idea on how to best deal with kooks, simply on the basis of what the folks at SI might or might not think about it. I'm not suggesting in any way that's what you did. Only to point out that any assumption that could inhibit percolating ideas needs to be examined.

As far as democracy is concerned, I'm not convinced it has anything to do with this web site. Democracy is a form of government, and as far as I can tell, this site is near-total anarchy. How to best deal with kooks in an environment of anarchy is the real question. :-)

Thanks for your comments--very pertinent.
