In response to several exchanges we have made recently on the drop off in posts at SI, I sent the following email to SI this morning. Any support from others might make a difference.

Hi,

I'm a SI member posting under the name Robert Douglas. I have had several exchanges with other members lately about the drop off in number and quality of posts on the threads that I frequent. Your newly instituted feature of allowing moderated discussions has given me an idea.

First off, let me say it is a great idea because it goes to the heart of what I think is the problem of many other discussion boards, i.e. the quality of the posts needs to be determined by board members because they are the ones with the most at stake. Congratulations on this new feature.

My idea is even more revolutionary. Why not allow leaders of moderated discussions to allow non-members to post on those threads? I have often seen SI members bemoan the fact that so-and-so over on Yahoo!, or some other bulletin board, doesn't post here. This would allow them to post in a limited number of forums without paying for membership. From SI's viewpoint, it could expose new people to the virtues of SI and many would certainly join. Right?

Please give this some serious thought. Bringing in quality posters from around the world would make SI the elite place to post and to read.
