OT A break for some good news: Addictions protect against Parkinson's By David Derbyshire, Medical Correspondent PEOPLE who cannot get through the day without cigarettes, strong coffee and a stiff drink may be protected against Parkinson's disease. Researchers have found that those with addictive personalities are less likely to develop the degenerative brain disease. The findings were presented at the American Academy of Neurology in San Diego, California, by Dr Patricia Willems-Giesbergen, of the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, who was a member of the team of scientists who spent 10 years studying 8,000 people aged over 55. Smokers and coffee drinkers were found to be more protected the more they consumed, but drinking more alcohol did not offer more protection. The scientists believed that the protection from the disease was associated with dopamine, the "feel good" chemical neurotransmitter.(cont) telegraph.co.uk
