Tom, they simply don't stop as long as every living soul engaged in a food fight insists on having the last word. That is one of the most annoying things about these exchanges, that no one is willing to let them go. It is obviously more important to people that persist like this to attempt to get majority opinion on their side of the argument than it is to stop it.

The best way to stop this behavior is to simply stop. If everybody simply "ignored" those they consider to be inflammatory, these fights would be brief and die out quickly for lack of fuel.
