It has been my experience, and frustration, that brokerage firms don't pay interest on cash proceeds generated from short sales. Instead the cash remains frozen in the account, becoming a sterile asset and an interest free loan to the broker.

Do you know of brokers that do pay interest, or -- failing that, permit the short seller to invest the money in MM funds or T-bills?
