From PC Week -- Rumor Central:

"So, if you can't beat 'em, hack 'em. That seems to be the prevailing sentiment last week at Netscape, where certain Einsteins-in-training with Netscape IP addresses worked themselves into an absolute tizzy over ZD Net's latest Quick Poll.

"The poll, which appeared on the ZD Net Web site Monday afternoon, posed the question, 'Who will win the browser wars: Microsoft or Netscape?' For the first 24 hours, respondents were evenly split in their opinion, with the two companies garnering approximately the same number of votes.

"Then on Tuesday afternoon, Netscape suddenly surged in the lead. And kept on surging. Alert ZD Net developers quickly identified the reason: an automated procedure for casting votes on Netsacpe's behalf. Three IP addresses, each belonging to Netscape, had cast a total of 953 votes for the Mountain View juggernaut in a matter of hours. (Under normal circumstances, users are prevented from casting more than one vote per poll.) 'I haven't seen such blatant ballot stuffing since Mayor Daley's reign,' quipped the whiskered ward heeler, just back from the Windy City for Comdex. 'Those Netscape scapegraces deserve a big box of cookies for their efforts.'

"By Tuesday night the crooked votes had been identified and removed from the Quick Poll tally."
