Joe, all...

<< Is buying ArrowPoint, Cisco's attempt to get into storage without using Fibre Channel? I sounds like the battle lines are being drawn, with SUN and EMC on one side and CISCO on the other. >>

The recent discussions on FC, SCSI and Ethernet are very interesting. Am I being way too confident in thinking that EMC choosing to back FC in storage is akin to Intel backing the next CPU architecture in their next line up in microprocessors? EMC is currently THE gorilla in storage not Cisco. Seems the writing is on the wall for storage in that FC is here to stay for some time. It doesn't hurt that mighty SUN, king of the UNIX world, is quickly changing direction to try to become a storage powerhouse with EMC and by using FC as its protocal of choice.

The question seems to me as it has been for years now (ever since Seagate started slapping the FC interface on their new storage devices) is if FC will stretch over into the LAN in the years ahead. Perhaps this is why Cisco is trying to control something (SCSI with IP, Etherstorage...when FC is so much more powerful and will soon be just as cheap???)...I find it hard to believe that Cisco is going to be able to take a LAN technology and move that into storage in a short time. That would be like pushing a growing boulder (EMC, SUN, Hitachi, IBM, HP, etc...) straight up hill...

more thoughts would be appreciated...
