Actually, in my remark I had in mind multimode fibers - heuristically modes that "bounce" more more spend more time in the faster outer layers, which would compensate for the longer path length compared with lower modes... but graded fibers are as far as I know always used, even for thin single mode fiber where modal dispersion can be eliminated since only one is excited.

The splicing is an interesting problem - I assume it is not done by butting the fibers up against each other :-) Some form of lenses are used, no?
