My brother always remind me that changing concepts of life style, changes economy. Fashions of food and clothing are changing. Dr. Atkins' protein diet is slowing the supermarket business; and most supermarkets are remodeling to try to revive their business. Clothing firms are in the same boat; t-shirts(pockets?) and denims(stretch fabric) will and are changing to revive their business.
Obviously, the obsolescence and replacement theory can not dictate the change; but it can get designers to offer varieties. Thereby the economy will be revived.
Greenspan has to reduce rates by 0.5% to get banks to return to profitability. Loaning out at 6.44% while the overnight discount rate is at 5.5% means Feds want the big banks to merge and acquire to become smaller. The community banks will get more depositors and get richer. Feds' policy did not account for changing life style.
