Satellite phone launch

The recent difficulties, experienced by CDMA mobile phone users, are set to be the focus of a new marketing campaign by Vodafone, when it launches its satellite phone, in March.
The telecommunications provider, is hoping to attract two hundred thousand customers to the new network, the majority from rural and regional areas.
Marketing manager, Craig Norton, says the network will now provide total cover Australia wide at competitive mobile phone rates.
Craig Norton In geographic there's about five to six percent coverage of Australia with mobile phones. We are extending that to one hundred percent and that's an enormous leap forward for Australia. The further you go out of mobile phone coverage the more important it is to have that sort of coverage, even from just a safety perspective. So there's a terrific amount of potential for the service in terms of the benefits that it will offer rural
customers.

New satellite-based phone launched - Condon, Sydney

In what's being heralded as a breakthrough in mobile phone services, a new satellite-based system was launched in Sydney today. The new Vodaphone system drastically reduces the cost of calls and handpieces, the downfall of the failed Iridium satellite phone service. Calls will be at least one-third cheaper than existing satellite phones and will no longer be charged at international satellite rates.
