You must be joking! Please remember that it's half a century since I had to hit the text books. These days it feels right or not, which leaves me out on a limb as usual. H2SO4 or CUSO4 feels right but SO4 by itself doesn't, it feels naked. I never even thought of any of them as octets. For me an octet would be two lots of Spice Girls ar some such.

This seems to have been a week of coincidences. Did you catch the BBC show on CBC TV last night??I paid an unexpected visit to Cherrapunji travelling the length of India following the monsoon. The film didn't mention the amount of detail that you did but did confirm the 86 feet of rain in 1861.

Earlier in the week I booked a flight to go uo to the Okanagan for a couple of days later in the month, and noticed that the return would be on my Father's birthday, but was absolutely astounded when the young lady gave me the flight number on that return trip and found that it was my Father's Royal Navy number from WWI. Just another coincidence I suppose.

Underground bacteria seem to be the flavour of the month too, since they have come up several times. I note that even our thread host, Richard has gone underground. NASA I think is doing research on some arid land in Alaska to further their knowledge of bacteria's function in soil fertility. Some of the improver instrumentation developed for this purpose has already been redirected to examine a Martian rock found in Antarctica to prove firstly that it is from Mars, and secondly that it contains traces of microbial life from aeons past. If I understand it right they are seriously trying to figure out the techniques for reversing desertification on Earth and maybe even on Mars.

I'm not going unless I can go on Captain Janeway's ship.

Cheers

Edit:- I never strategically lost at anything in my life since I don't believe you learn from winning nearly as much as you do from losing. Thanks for the thought anyway.
