While the talk appears to have broken off, AT&T cannot afford to lose BBN to GTE.

It will seriously damage their long range plan. Even if AT&T were to start building their own backbone today, it will take them a long time. Having said that, I still have a tough time believing BBN management would agree to sell out their company at such a low price. AT&T will not stand still. Another potential suitor is Sprint. Sprint has the transmission but no Internet or router expertise. Another big windfall for the acquirer is BBN also manages the DOD's global router network. It will be silly for any large communication companies or RBOCs to let GTE pick up this crown jewel for pennies and take a quantum leap over its competitors.

Watch out for an all-out bidding war.
