Goutama,

Am I correct in assuming here that Micron's decision to support Athlons has some thing to do with Hotrail bailing out of Athlon server chipset business?

My guess is that some work went into the Athlon support well before HotRail story broke. I don't think Micron (which now is a very big player in DRAM) takes it lightly to be jerked around by Intel and Rambus. If RMBS/INTC strategy succeeds, all the DRAM makers are at the mercy of RMBS/INTC. Therefore the money invested in DDR chipset maybe only a drop in the bucket compared to a complete loss of independence. And now, what looked like a loss leader has a chance to become a money maker.

Just one word of caution, the work on Athlon Samurai may indeed be "fast and furious" but it is still way behind Piii/Samurai. Otherwise, I think the Athlon Samurai would have been demonstrated at WinHec along with Piii Samurai.
