Here are your comments:

"Look at the statements Lumenon makes. Insertion loss is decreasing steadily from values of 10 dB to our target of 5dB. Do you know how bad 10 dB loss is for an 8 channel DWDM? It is end of story, game over. If Lumenon cannot get the insertion loss down they will not be able to sell product. This is especially troubling since insertion loss is one of the things Sol Gel has always failed at. The same statement "Insertion loss is decreasing steadily from values of around 10 dB towards our target of 5dB" was also in Lumenon's brochure at OFC. What progress have they made since then? A 40 channel Gaussian AWG DWDM now is sold with specifications on insertion loss of less than 7dB"

Greeze, Lumm had preliminary specs for their 8 channel dwdm of insertion loss of 10db(Jan 2000). This data was for early chips and very few data points. I talked to management in Mar 2000 and they told me that the data on their webpage (<8 db insertion loss) was the current data and was passed out as limited spec sheets to prospective customers at OFC. BTW these are not target specs like Bookhams data. These are actual specs. Now months later lumm has developed a WWDM with specs of insertion loss of (<5 db) BTW this is not a target spec either. They are the actual specs of Protoypes. Just thought you would like to hear the real scoop.
Here is the WWDM PR, notice it states: HERE ARE THEIR PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS.....less than 5 db insertion loss...if I had a product with shaky specs and I knew that to be competitive I would have to have a product with insertion loss near 8db I wouldnt be saying my product had less than 5db insertion loss now would I?

Lumm press release:

1.3-micrometer WDM in particular highlights Lumenon's entry into optical chips for parallel physical layer Gigabit Ethernet for the LAN, MAN and WAN markets. Among their performance characteristics are: Insertion loss (less than 5 dB); Uniformity (better than 1 dB); Cross-talk at 1-dB (better than 22 dB); Cross-talk at center wavelength (better than 25 dB). Tailored-off-the-shelf units of WDM chips are projected to be ready for evaluation in Summer 2000 and for volume manufacturing in Spring 2001.
