How can an Index ($SOX) spike?

I have been trying to get a better understanding of the way in which focused trading in a few particular stocks could potentially create a "misleading" movement in an Index.

Towards this end I have been following changes in $SOX and its 16 component stocks.

On Thursday, May 4, 2000 the Index had been drifting down from a high of 1105.58 at 10:05:20 to 1061.60 at 12:09:29 at which time it spiked to 1103.33 at 12:11:07. Ticks were recorded at levels close to this until 12:12:45 when a tick at 1061.45 was recorded. After that point the ticks proceed in a more typical manner. Somewhat similar anomalous ticks can be seen at about 14:30 on Thursday and 10:35 on Friday.

It is interesting to note that each of these atypical ticks occur immediately prior to a change in trend for the Index (down to up).

$SOX (as stated on the PHLX site at phlx.com ) is a price-weighted index composed of 16 U.S. companies primarily involved in the design, distribution, manufacture, and sale of semiconductors. The Index Value Calculation is: Sum of Component Prices/ Base Market Divisor.

I do not understand how a spike such as this could occur. I have examined each of the tickers of the component companies and there are not price changes that would cause this type of change.

Once again, I am more confused than usual. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks-
