Celera about to hit the mother lode!

nytimes.com

Clinton and Blair are going to try an end run around Celera by personally announcing the consortium's sequencing completion. Venter says that the consortium's sequence is not worthy because it isn't assembled and ordered. The author speculates that Celera's announcement of assembly before next month's announcement by the consortium will be made to preempt the consortiums end run play. This looks very good.

Also, I may be wrong but I interpret the article to say that the consortium acknowledges Celera's right to restrict use of their data by their competitors into genbank, but they do not have the resources to enforce this right. So until this can be done, there is no compelling reason for them to share with the consortium. Eventually this will probably happen. But time is a wastin', and time is money.

The implications of Celera's lead and the imminent victory they are to claim are profound. In regards to their lead, the Riken Institute of Japan recently announced they are going bigtime into genome research. But they say they are too far behind in the human genome to even try to catch up. This speaks very well to the future of Celera. The barriers to entry in this market are completely closed. This speaks to the fruits of victory - Not only will there be no new competitors, the current ones will lose a lot of face and confidence, setting in place a trend that will soon result in going concern problems.

There is another article in LATimes. I haven't read it yet. I will post my thoughts on it and the link after I locate and read it.
