Claire's Stores, Inc. Reports April Sales Up 17%; Same Store
Sales Climb 8%
PEMBROKE PINES, Fla., May 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Claire's Stores, Inc. (NYSE:CLE) reported today sales for
the four weeks ended May 3 were $35,020,000, up 17 percent over $29,848,000 reported for the four
weeks ended May 4, 1996. Same store sales were up eight percent for the comparable four week period.
Sales for the three month period ended May 3, the first quarter of Fiscal 1998, were $108,071,000, a
17 percent increase over sales of $92,381,000 recorded for the first quarter of Fiscal l997. Same store
sales were up eight percent for the quarter.
Rowland Schaefer, Chairman and President of Claire's, noted that the April and first quarter sales
results were significantly better than analysts had expected. ``We posted spectacularly good numbers in
the first three months of last year,'' he said, ``and I believe there was some skepticism that we could
beat those numbers to begin Fiscal 1998. Obviously, we did beat them and we expect our strong sales
momentum to continue.''
Mr. Schaefer said the company will release first quarter earnings figures Tuesday, May 13.

accessories, currently owns 1562 stores in 49 states, the Caribbean, Canada, Japan and the United
