That's what I use for back-up, a large second HDD.

I use Drive Image for back-ups, and also back-up critical data to CDR.

The last Virus I was infected with was when my anit-virus software was not installed. I had some commercial work done and the disks that were returned were infected with a boot virus. I started losing drives, but was able to download a program and wipe the virus with no damage to my system.

If you use a second HDD and store your images on that drive, I can't see why it would not be safe.
