I like this a lot! (Taken from ANCR's Infiniband paper)

Switches

InfiniBand allows a TCA to connect directly to an HCA, but most of the
power of InfiniBand comes from having the Switch in between
, to provide
multiple connections.

Switches interconnect multiple links by passing data packets between
various ports. Multiple HCAs could link with multiple TCAs through a
Switch (or Switches) to provide high availability, higher aggregate
bandwidth, load balancing, or data copying to a backup storage site. In
the industry, a group of Switches is commonly called a "fabric".

The Switch is a natural place to configure and control the fabric because:

The Switch will still be working if any of the computers should be
down for maintenance or repair (which can become likely as you
add more computers to the fabric),
The Switch is less likely to be isolated by congestion within the
fabric, and
Having the Switch manage the fabric frees up the computers and
other devices to do what they were designed for.
