ITU appoints "Rapportuer" for study group on xDSL standards SKOKIE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 7, 1997-- US Robotics technologist to chair ITU study group U.S. Robotics (NASDAQ:USRX - news) announced that the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) recently appointed Dick Stuart, U.S. Robotics vice president of technology, as the Rapporteur for Study Group 15 - Question 4, Network Access Systems. Mr. Stuart will be leading an international team to develop global and country-specific Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) standards. DSL is an emerging multi-megabit data-access service. Dozens of telephone service providers worldwide are conducting technical and market trials, but standards are still evolving. ``DSL needs a true international standard with the flexibility to address country-specific requirements and to provide for interoperability and portability. A true ITU Recommendation is the only way to ensure this,'' says Stuart. Stuart currently is active in a number of standards committees including the ITU Study Group 16 - Question 4, High Speed Modems; ANSI TR-30 US Modem Standards; the ADSL Forum; and served as a US State Department Delegate to the ITU. Stuart chaired the development of ITU Recommendations for V.32 bis as well as V.34, for which he and the ITU were awarded PC Magazine's 1994 Technical Excellence Award.
