Charles - Your analogy is terrible, actually. You are revealing your lack of knowledge of the security policy tools built into both the OS and application administration for MSFT products, and spouting stuff that has nothing to do with the real world. You can, for example, decide that you will only transmit and accept digitally signed and encrypted attachments - or that you will do that for internal mail (say from your boss). Or a bunch of other choices to "tighten up" your security policy. Most people think that stuff is "too much trouble" - just like they think a Unix desktop is "too much trouble".

Your analogy might be better written as:
You buy a new house. You install a full security system with perimeter alarms, sonic detection, space intrusion alarms, and thermal sensors. But the damn thing keeps going off when a bird hits a window or the cat wanders through. So first you disable the thermal and space alarms. But your wife can't always remember how to disable the system when she comes in, so she just decides to not set it "if she's just going out for a minute". The result - you might as well not have any security.

If one day while your wife is at the corner grocery, and the alarms are not set, a thief walks in and steals your TV, is that the security company's fault?
