I used to have Etrade in both IRA and Margin. Now both are Datek. Etrade administers IRA's themselves and doesn't charge an annual fee. Datek requires you to sign up with a 3rd party trust co. and they charge $100/yr.
So if you trade 20 times a year or more, a Datek IRA will pay for itself.
Etrade margin accounts have free checking, I haven't looked in a while, but though Datek says it's coming, they either still don't have it, or haven't sent me any email announcing it.

I changed to Datek because they are cheaper (except for unmarginables), they are faster (a few months ago they were much faster, now they seem almost as slow as Etrade was in January ), and they are free if they don't execute a marketable order in 1 minute. Etrade constantly denied they were having problems, even as I documented market orders that languished for minutes.
