PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 8, 2000--ClearData.net, a national
provider of data communications services, has formed a strategic
relationship with Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE: CPQ).
Under the agreement, Compaq has made a $25 million commitment to
ClearData.net, including a $5 million equity investment and $20
million in debt financing. In addition, ClearData will design and
build its data centers, points of presence, network and internal
infrastructure on Compaq hardware, to include servers, storage
solutions, desktops, laptops and related services.
ClearData provides a complete suite of nationwide products and
services ranging from application and server hosting to high-speed
Internet access and managed services.
"Compaq's NonStop(TM) eBusiness solutions provide the performance
and scalability we need to be a leading solutions provider in the
communications business," said ClearData.net Chief Executive Officer
David Jemmett. "It's a 'win win' for ClearData and our customers.
"Our support team can develop manageable products utilizing the
latest technologies, and our customers receive high-quality, reliable
products and services."
Compaq is delivering a full range of solutions to ClearData,
including Compaq AlphaServer and ProLiant application servers,
StorageWorks solutions, Deskpro desktops and Armada notebooks. In
addition, Compaq Services will provide professional services to
support Compaq Tru64 UNIX, Linux and Microsoft Windows 2000/NT
platforms.
"Compaq leads the industry in providing emerging Service Providers
such as ClearData.net with the technology, comprehensive solutions and
services they need to meet their business requirement for 24x7
uptime," said Keith McAuliffe, vice president and general manager of
Compaq's Service Provider Business Unit. "With Compaq, ClearData.net
is able to quickly deploy applications tested on Compaq server and
storage solutions, integrate its customers' legacy systems and
applications, and rapidly scale or upgrade systems as customer needs
require."
This agreement is one of several strategic partnerships that
privately-held ClearData has formed over the last 90 days as it
aggressively builds out a national broadband network. The company
recently announced a 20-year, $182 million agreement with Williams
Communications Group (NYSE: WCG) to purchase fiber-optic network
capacity and services.
In a related transaction, Williams Communications acquired a 19.9
percent equity position in ClearData.net. ClearData also announced the
acquisition of the mainland consumer Internet customers and other
select assets of Washington-based GST Telecommunications
(NASDAQ: GSTX), a leading Integrated Communications Provider (ICP) in
the western United States.
